How to Make The Perfect Burger Like The Grownup You Almost Are
Yesterday was National Hamburger Day! Who doesn’t love a day that centers around food? It seems only fitting to celebrate with…hamburgers, of course! Tasty, juicy and the ever-appropriate summer meat of choice! But because I am a Registered Dietitian, I feel compelled to share a few thoughts on selecting the best meat. When possible, always opt for free-range, grass–fed beef. This should be clearly labeled on the package. And lucky for you, more and more grocery stores are now stocking free-range and grass–fed options. While this choice might be pricier, the meat is of a higher quality, and absolutely tastes great. I always remind my nutrition clients “If you don’t know what they eat, you don’t know what you eat.” Here’s my favorite recipe for spiced (and super-savory!) grownup hamburgers…
Ingredients for four servings:
1 pound 90% lean grass-fed ground beef
1 onion, finely chopped
1 egg, scrambled
1 tsp garlic powder
¼ cup crumbled feta cheese
¼ tsp kosher salt
¼ tsp black pepper
Directions:
- In a large bowl, mix beef, onion and egg until well combined
- Fold in garlic powder and feta cheese
- Divide and form meat into four even balls, then form into patties
- With your thumb, make a small indentation in the center of each patty (this helps prevent the burger from becoming ‘tall’ when it cooks)
- Grill for about 5 minutes and flip, cooking an additional 2 minutes (for a medium rare burger)
- Enjoy on a grilled bun with your topping of choice (maybe last week’s hummus alternatives?) or over a salad for a lower-carb and gluten free option
We’d love to hear from you! What’s your favorite hamburger topping? And as always, please let us know if you try this recipe at home!
