Maisie Williams stars in Marvel’s The New Mutants, and the trailer will give you nightmares
While we can’t predict what 2020 has in store for us, it’s nice to know that one thing remains constant: brand-new installments from beloved superhero franchises. Yesterday, January 6th, us comic-book nerds got our first taste of what our favorite film genre has in store for us this year: 20th Century Fox dropped a full-length trailer for The New Mutants, which stars Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams and is based on the Marvel graphic novel of the same name.
And it is, in short, terrifying.
Don’t expect the wholesome, flashy heroics of your favorite Marvel superheroes (we’re looking at you, Spiderman). Rather, The New Mutants bills itself as “an original horror thriller,” and the trailer doesn’t disappoint.
The X-Men spinoff is set in a mysterious psychiatric hospital, “where a group of young mutants is being held for monitoring,” as the trailer’s YouTube description reads. But the burgeoning mutants quickly understand that this institution is no ordinary hospital.
"This place takes your greatest fears and makes you live through it until it kills you," one character wryly observes.
The young mutants are just beginning to discover their powers as they attempt to escape the facility in the wake of “strange occurrences,” before the doomed facility and that creepy doctor does, in fact, kill them.
Williams plays Rahne Sinclair, who also goes by the mutant moniker “Wolfsbane.”
Her fellow mutants include Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa/Sunspot, Stranger Things’ Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie/Cannonball, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin/Magik, who casually admits that she “killed 18 men, one by one.”
Marvel fans know that this movie has been a long time coming. After its initial announcement in 2015, the BBC reported that the film was plagued by a series of setbacks: reshoots, recasts, rewrites, a Disney-Fox merger, and postponed opening dates to accommodate the premieres of fellow Marvel movies Deadpool 2 and Dark Phoenix.
But it seems that the film is finally getting its place in the sun (or accursed psychiatric hospital). The New Mutants is set to hit theaters on April 3rd, 2020. Until then, we’ll be sleeping with one eye open.
