Lupita Nyong’o once got stood up for prom

Nobody deserves to be stood up at prom, but if you’re lucky, you’ll be able to make your date really, really regret it. We bet that’s the case for Lupita Nyong’o, who told Seth Meyers about her first prom, and how the boy she asked to go with her simply didn’t show up.

This sounds crazy for so many reasons. Who has the chance to go to prom with Lupita and turns it down? The actress explained what happened and it got even more heartbreaking.

First, she asked a boy who she had been interested in for a while but didn’t know that well. He said yes, so she went ahead and made her dress, and the colors were red and yellow. This, Seth Meyers points out, might have been the problem. It’s pretty hard to match with red and yellow.

Whatever the reason, prom rolled around, and Lupita got stood up. Fortunately, it looks like she’s over it (winning an Oscar probably helps!) and we know he’s definitely kicking himself for missing out on such an awesome opportunity.
