Lupita Nyong’o just dropped a truth bomb on the Oscars via Instagram

In 2014, Lupita Nyong’o took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her powerhouse performance in Twelve Years a Slave. That moment cemented her A-list status, and during her reign as a household name, Lupita has seized opportunities to use her platform as a force for good.

When the 2016 Oscar nominees came out, it was shocking and upsetting to see that one hundred percent of the acting nominations went to white actors. In a year that featured dazzling performances from people of color, including but not limited to Idris Elba in Beasts of No Nation,  Michael B. Jordan in Creed, Samuel L. Jackson in The Hateful Eight, and, real talk, the entire cast of Straight Outta Compton, it feels criminal that the only white actors will be in the running for the highest honor Hollywood bestows.

Lupita Nyong’o took to Instagram late yesterday to express her disappointment, posting the following message:

She captioned her message with this perfect quote from James Baldwin: “Not everything that is faced can be changed. But nothing can be changed until it is faced.”

Lupita isn’t alone in calling for change. Several recognizable Hollywood faces have stepped forward in the wake of the nominations, expressing their dismay, including Jada Pinkett Smith, Spike Lee, and George Clooney.

We are so glad that Lupita lent her influential voice to this conversation and beautifully advocated for change. We’re right there with you, Lupita.
