Lupita Nyong’o talks about the liberating moment she had when she shaved her hair for the first time

When Lupita Nyong’o came on the scene and took the world by storm, she mesmerized us all with her bold baldness and raw beauty. As of late, Lupita is wearing her natural hair in various chic hairstyles that demonstrate her hair’s versatility. And now, the actress is gracing Allure‘s March 2018 cover, which features different natural hairstyles that celebrate her hair.

The latest issue of Allure focuses on “The Culture of Hair,” which highlights the strength and power of kinky and coily hair. In the glossy’s issue, Lupita’s go-to hairstylist, Vernon François, styled the Black Panther star’s hair. Not only did Vernon create breathtaking looks, but he wanted to show the versatility in kinky hair, writing in an Instagram post, “I wanted to show that coily or kinky hair has many strengths and can be worn in lots of different ways, celebrating its beauty and versatility.” Hopefully, this inspires others to embrace their natural hair.

Lupita opened up about learning to love her hair, and the liberating moment she had when she shaved her hair completely for the first time. Lupita told Allure:

"When I was about 18 or 19, I didn’t have a job or anything, so it was really my parents paying for my hair. So I was once asking for some more money to get my hair done and my dad joked, 'Why don’t you just cut it all off?' And a few months later, I thought to myself, 'Why don’t I?' I went into the hair salon, and I said, 'Let’s cut it off.'"
