Seventeen years ago, Adrian Franklin and Brooke Gibson were in a wedding together. The pair walked down the aisle together, with Adrian as ring bearer and Brooke as the flower girl. And last month, they walked down the aisle again … this time as bride and groom!
The North Carolina couple met in church when they were kids, and Brooke immediately had a crush on Adrian. But the feeling wasn’t exactly mutual.
“He absolutely could not stand me,” she told ABC News. “He said I got on his nerves. I’d tried to play with him at school and at church, and he just didn’t want much to do with me at all.”
When the pair were asked to walk together at the 2001 wedding of mutual family friends, Adrian wasn’t thrilled, but they didn’t really have a choice—they were five years old, after all.
By the time they got to high school, Adrian had come around and asked Brooke to be his girlfriend. “We would draw with our finger on each other’s backs and guess what the other person was writing,” Adrian, now 22, told ABC. “I wrote ‘Will you be my girlfriend’ and she guessed it, but didn’t answer me. I said ‘Well Brooke, are you going to say anything?’ and she said ‘Well you didn’t write a question mark.'” So when it came time to propose a few years later, he decided to use the same trick, writing out a sign that popped the question, but leaving off the question mark. It wasn’t until the big day, though, that the bride who married in 2001 shared a picture of them as kids, pointing out that they were even getting married in the same church—South Gastonia Church of God, in Gastonia, North Carolina.
“We forgot that we were in the wedding together and she brought the photos to us,” Brooke told ABC7Chicago. “She just thought that was the neatest thing. She was really excited.”
We can’t blame her. Is there anything sweeter than a love story 17 years in the making?
