“Younger” star Nico Tortorella defends his belief in polyamory
Nico Tortorella, who stars as Josh on Younger, has always been outspoken about his non-monogamous relationship. He identifies as pansexual and has been in a relationship with a queer woman for 11 years, and the both of them are free to explore relationships with other people. Call it an open relationship, call it polyamory, or just call it Tortorella and his partner Bethany Meyers’ relationship, but that’s what works for them. Tortollea revealed all of this to The Advocate over the summer, but now he’s expanding on his relationship.
Tortorella appeared on Personal Space, a new Bravo series about sex and relationships where he opened up about his relationship.
Tortorella addressed the common myth that people in open relationships or polyamorists just want to have lots of sex with people other than their partner.
When asked if he was a polyamorist, Tortorella says “That is the word for it, yes.”
For anyone who doesn’t understand his relationship or beliefs, Tortorella says maybe it’s just because people haven’t been exposed to it.
“The fact of the matter is, we’ve only been shown one story since basically the beginning of time and that’s man, woman, and family — and that’s it,” Tortorella explains.
Another member of the panel, Steve Ward — a CEO of a matchmaking site, wondered if Tortorella’s life is more difficult because he’s poly. He used an analogy of climbing a wall.
“If you consider your life to be like a rock-faced wall, you can climb that wall by yourself or you can climb that wall in a group of people, like Nico here would prefer to do,” Ward says. “Or you can climb that wall in tandem, and two people climbing that wall together are more likely to make it to the top easier, more safely than if you have too many people in your group or if you’re just doing it on your own.”
To which Tortorella defended his rock wall approach with:
“I’m always climbing the wall with one other person, but that person is just changing.”
