As you are likely already aware, Bachelor Nation couple Ben Higgins and Lauren Bushnell have called off their engagement. We’re quite sad, but if they will be happier separate, of course, that’s all that matters. While the two have been previously quiet about their break-up, today, Ben got real about his split from Lauren, and the interview is almost so relatable it hurts.

On a sneak-peak of the podcast, Ben and Ashley: Almost Famous, that he will soon release with fellow Bachelor-alum Ashley Iaconetti, Higgins talks about coming to terms with the realization that maybe they just weren’t right for each other, despite that there was so much love between them.

“I think mutually Lauren and I saw that life was getting more difficult,” Higgins shared.  “I would say the joy that we felt toward our relationship at the beginning was — for some reason — slipping away, and we were both working very hard to bring that joy back. And it just never seemed to get there. So it was a long time coming but it wasn’t necessarily like we dragged it out.”

Ouch. The worst.

He also touches on his mental state currently, which is, as to be expected, not all that great:

“I am a little confused, a little lost, but I’m doing alright,” he says. “Life is going to be good and I know that from past experiences, any type of brokenness…often times those situations can be turned into a beautiful thing. I think that’s what’s going to happen here and that’s what I’m confident in today.”

And while some other couples who have been through such a traumatic and public ordeal might be bitter, Ben still feels grateful for the time they had together:

“I am a better man today because of Lauren and because of our relationship than I was two years ago.”

So, what’s next for the pair? Ben will stay in Denver and keep busy with his new aforementioned podcast, while Lauren will continue growing her lifestyle blog from California. We wish them all of the best!
