Quotes to help you through a long distance relationship
Being in a long distance relationship comes with a unique set of challenges. Technological advances have made contacting a loved one that is abroad or far away relatively easy, but it’s still not the same as being able to hang out on the couch together. Here are a couple of quotes that make being in a long distance relationship a little easier.
“I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil.”
–The Return of the King, J.R.R. Tolkien
Gandalf says this before he, Frodo, and several other companions set sail for the West, effectively ending the Fellowship of the Ring in Middle Earth. When you are saying goodbye to your sweetie after a visit, you can feel the tears coming on, and you shouldn’t be ashamed to let them out. As Gandalf said, not all tears are an evil.
“What I thought was that if you–maybe just once a year–if we could come here at the same time, just for an hour or something, then we could pretend we were close again–because we would be close, if you sat here and I sat just here in my world…”
–The Amber Spyglass, Phillip Pullman
Lyra and Will, the protagonists of Phillip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy, have the ultimate long distance relationship, as their love is split between two universes. Regardless of that fact, Lyra and Will make a pledge to each other to sit on a bench on the campus of Oxford University, once a year, for an hour, to remember each other and to be close once more. This can apply to a long distance relationship as well, as when you and your partner think about each other, your hearts are side by side.
“We belong to the light, we belong to the thunder
We belong to the sound of the words we’ve both fallen under
Whatever we deny or embrace for worse or for better
We belong, we belong, we belong together…”
-“We Belong,” Pat Benatar, Tropico
If you are feeling lonely and down because your love isn’t by your side, I can guarantee you that this tune by Pat Benatar will reinvigorate your spirit and your heart. Plus, Benatar will make you jealous of her killer white blazer and black leather pants combination that she wears in the music video, which can distract you from your lonely heart.
“Together they had overcome the daily incomprehension, the instantaneous hatred, the reciprocal nastiness, and fabulous flashes of glory in the conjugal conspiracy. It was time when they both loved each other best, without hurry or excess, when both were most conscious of and grateful for their incredible victories over adversity. Life would still present them with other moral trials, of course, but that no longer mattered: they were on the other shore.”
–Love in the Time of Cholera, Gabriel García Márquez
There is always another shore in a relationship. In a long distance relationship, there can me many literal shores, especially if you and your partner are separated by coasts or continents. Regardless of these facts, once you and your sweetheart are on the other shore, standing side by side, you can look back in triumph at all of the adversity you had to overcome together to reach the other side.
Long distance relationships are hard, but they can be worth it, too. Hopefully this helps.
