15 heart-melting movie quotes every bestie can relate to
Welcome to Besties Week! We’re kicking off the release of our first HelloGiggles book, A Tale of Two Besties, with an epic celebration of friendship and stories about friendship. Read an excerpt of the book, buy a copy, catch us on our cross-country book tour, and share your photos from our events by tagging us @hellogiggles #ATaleofTwoBesties.
In the meantime, join the party right here. All week long, our contributors will be sharing stories, essays and odes to their very own partners-in-crime. Read, laugh, cry (because you’re laughing) and share with your bestie!
It is nearly impossible to compile a list of the best best friend quotes from movies. I mean there are tons. But we all totally have our favorites, right? I just thought about movie moments that have made me cry, or have made me laugh, and then I realized: that is what friendship is. Best friendships have plenty of laughter, and plenty of tears, and sometimes jerk-moments, and always forgiveness. Why should the movies be any different? In honor of besties, here are some of the best-iest quotes from favorite movies.
“Me! Books and cleverness! There are more important things: friendship and bravery.”
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
There are a million wonderful bestie relationships throughout the Harry Potter series, but I have a soft spot for Harry and Hermione. From the moment their friendship was solidified (the troll, though the aforementioned quote is one that always makes me cry), the two are inseparable, supportive, loving, and honest with one another. Not to mention, they literally save each other’s lives, like a lot.
“But the thing that makes Woody special is he’ll never give up on you…ever.”
Toy Story 3
Sorry that you are likely already bawling and we are only on number two, but how could I leave off Andy and Woody?! If you have ever loved a stuffed animal or a toy as much as Andy loved Woody (and vice versa), you know that best friendships can come in all shapes, sizes, and stationary status. (Still believe toys move, though. I am a child of the 90s in all ways.)
“You look so good with blonde hair and black roots, it’s like not even funny.”
Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion
Because only best friends have the ability to look past your blonde hair and black roots. (Though I like that look, tbh.)
“I think I’ll miss you most of all.”
The Wizard of Oz
There are lots of phenomenal friendships in The Wizard of Oz, but nothing tears me up like this line. Sweet Scarecrow and Dorothy’s friendship is one for the books.
“I find I’m so excited, I can barely sit still or hold a thought in my head. I think it’s the excitement only a free man can feel, a free man at the start of a long journey whose conclusion is uncertain. I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope.”
The Shawshank Redemption
Red and Andy will break your heart, but they will make you believe in hope again. Hope, hope, hope–friends will give you that.
“Irregardless, ex-boyfriends are just off limits to friends. I mean, that’s just like, the rules of feminism.”
Though Mean Girls is really all about how hard friendships can be, there are some solid quotes about besties throughout the film. Just don’t be like Regina. Or Cady. Or Gretchen. I guess if you have to be like someone, be like Karen. She’s sweet.
“It’s so nice when you can sit with someone and not have to talk.”
When Harry Met Sally
Yeah, we all know that Harry and Sally end up–eventually!–as more than besties, but they really work their way up to that point. Their friendship, when it is a friendship, is one that we all hope to have. (And maybe we all secretly hope to have the end of that friendship too, but that’s okay!)
“Why can’t you just be happy for me and then go home and talk behind my back later like a NORMAL PERSON?”
Annie and Lillian are such a perfect example of best friends. Why? They fight–big time. And is that above quote not so true? We are allowed to vent about even our besties, y’all.
“Well, maybe sometimes it’s easier to be mad at the people you trust. Because you know they’ll always love you, no matter what.”
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants
Hopefully you have caught on to this fact by now. It really is easier to be mad at the people you are closest to. Acquaintances get away with murder. Your bestie? She will still love you after you yell at her about something stupid. That’s what friends are for.
“She’s my friend because we both know what it’s like to have people jealous of us.”
And if you can both appreciate one another’s insane beauty, great style, perfect sense of humor, and ability to impress everyone around you, then you are definitely meant to be besties.
“I found out what the secret to life is: friends. Best friends.”
Fried Green Tomatoes
Now that we all know the secret to life, let’s have a party with our besties.
“Only a true friend would be that truly honest.”
Sometimes your best friend is an annoying little donkey voiced by Eddie Murphy and by “sometimes,” I mean I desperately wish. Being truly honest really does make you a true friend, regardless of your animal-or-ogre-status.
“I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve.”
Stand by Me
As a person who met all of her besties when she was 12 years old, I can attest to this quote being entirely true. There is nothing like a friendship that starts at such a young age.
“I can’t carry it for you, but I can carry you.”
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
The friend that carries you instead of your creepy ring is the truest bestie. (Or figuratively carries you, since I hope none of us have been through what Sam and Frodo go through.)
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
Even the universe cannot separate the unlikely bestie-ship between Elliott and his alien friend E.T. Tears, always.
