Are you guilty of breadcrumbing on e-dating sites? If so, you’re more than likely not alone.

According to the Urban Dictionary, ‘breadcrumbing’ is:

And, while the act itself isn’t new, finally having a name for it makes it feel so much more official.

But, why do people do this whole ‘breadcrumbing’ thing, you ask? We’ve got a couple of reasons for you below.

One reason why people do it is to mark a dating prospect as your territory, even though you may not be interested in a relationship right away. And another is the desire to stay relevant to someone who’s in to you, when you’re not in to them.

Sounds pretty crappy, right?

Remember those harmless Instagram likes and heart-eyed emojis? Yeah, those count, too. What can start off as a little flirtation, can lead to some extreme complicated feelings. Online dating is pretty tricky enough without having to worry about someone ‘ghosting’ or leading you on via ‘breadcrumbs.’ So, if you find yourself doing either, knock it off.

It’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt. And in the game of breadcrumbs, everyone is left hungry and someone will definitely get hurt.

Ahhh, dating, will you ever get any easier?
