This classic show is getting a Netflix reboot

Another day, another Netflix reboot. So what’s the streaming site pulling out of the TV vault today? The 1965-1968 sci-fi series Lost in Space that ran on CBS back in the day and focused on a family — the Robinson family, to be specific — who managed to get, well, lost in space.

According to Deadline, this Lost in Space reboot has been in the works for a while, and a few major networks were vying to land the show. Netflix won out, and pending the first actual script, the show could go right to series. That means we could see a new Lost in Space sooner rather than later.

The original show was loosely based on the story of the Swiss Family Robinson, but you know, IN SPACE! And fun fact: The original show was actually set in 1997. This new version is being describe as an “epic but grounded science fiction saga focusing on a young explorer family from earth lost in an alien universe and the challenges they face in staying together against seemingly insurmountable odds.” This new version will not be set in 1997.

Even though the show has been off the air for more than four decades, there have been a few Lost in Space adaptations over the years. Let’s never forget the critically-panned, but loved-a-lot-by-me, 1998 movie version, that starred Matt LeBlanc as the space hero. I thought that version was campy and great, but then again ’98 me really loved space and Joey Tribbiani a lot.

There was also the 1996 Nickelodeon version of the show, Space Cases, which took the focus away from a family lost in space, and instead had a group of teenagers lost IN SPACE!

And also, we can’t forget The Muppet’s parody of the series, “Pigs in Space,” a long-running segment that had Miss Piggy as the ship’s First Mate. Because, obviously.

This new TV show will be nothing like the above adaptations, because that’s the definition of the term “reboot.” Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama (The Last Witch Hunter) are set to write the script with Neil Marshall (The Descent) directing. This new Lost in Space sounds like it’ll be more family friendly than the others, but keep practicing your best Robot voice, “Danger, Will Robinson.” Somehow that’s going to be worked in.
