Lorde’s latest track is an ode to the rush of young love

With exactly a week until she *finally* releases her sophomore album, Lorde has shared a new track, “Sober,” from the collection, and it’s a stunning ode to the rush of young love.

The song comes a week after Lorde released the melancholic banger “Perfect Places,” which she performed live for the first time at the Governor’s Ball in New York last weekend, and follows the euphoric dance-pop lead single “Green Light” and the tender ballad “Liability.”

All four of these songs are taken from the singer’s highly anticipated sophomore album Melodrama, which is due for release on June 16th. The singer has described the record as a sort of concept album that focuses around a house party.

Speaking to the New York Times, Lorde spoke about how her album was more than a breakup album. Instead of focusing on her recent breakup itself, the singer decided to focus on the part afterwards as she navigates her new life as a single woman. To do this, she said, she chose to set the record in a house party.

“With a party, there’s that moment where a great song comes on and you’re ecstatic, and then there’s that moment later on where you’re alone in the bathroom, looking in the mirror, you don’t think you look good, and you start feeling horrible,” she explained.

From the songs we’ve heard, it seems that we’ve explored a few of these emotions, and now with her latest track “Sober,” Lorde is exploring a more…sexual side to her music.

In the NYT profile, it was stated that Lorde wrote the song in March 2016, and it was actually the track that lead her to feel like she was on to something with her new album Melodrama. The song features horns and Lorde’s signature raspy and soulful vocals, while the lyrics deal with the duplicitousness of a weekend partying and hooking up with people.

Meanwhile, Lorde recently announced the dates for a string of international dates, including those in her home country New Zealand. The singer has yet to announce a North American tour.

Melodrama is slated for release June 16th.
