Lorde has a new song coming out, and we think we know the meaning behind it

If you’re a Lorde fan, you may have experienced some feelings of confusion over the last couple days. The singer-songwriter has new music coming out on March 2nd, and instead of just releasing the new song and putting us out of our misery, she’s dropping peculiar hints left and right, sending us all on a wild goose chase.

Here’s what we know for sure: Lorde is releasing a song called “Green Light” on March 2nd (March 3rd in New Zealand), and the name of her new album is M*******A. Yep, what those asterisks represent is still a mystery.

Lorde hasn’t released any new music since 2013, so she’s been dropping clues on Twitter and Instagram that leave everyone stewing in anticipation. She also sent her fans on a scavenger hunt around the city of Auckland, where they found a few different enigmatic hints, all shroud in green. She’s also directed us to a new website imwaitingforit.com, which features a short clip of “Green Light” — and nothing else.

We’ve only heard five seconds of the song so far, but it’s definitely more upbeat than most of the stuff on her last album Pure Heroine.

Here are the "Green Light" lyrics we've heard so far: "I'll come get my things / But I can't let go / I'm waiting for it."

The clues Lorde left all over Auckland left us with a few other lyrics to chew on.

The signs say: “She thinks you love the beach, you’re such a damn liar” and “I do my makeup in someone else’s car.”

We’re not given much information here, but we can take a stab at the meaning behind “Green Light.” From what we’ve heard and read so far, it sounds like there’s a breakup happening here, and perhaps even an affair. The short clip of the song, which sounds like it’s from the chorus, touches on a classic breakup: “I’ll come get my things / but I can’t let go.” However, when you read the “Green Light” signs in Auckland, it sounds like either Lorde or the person Lorde is singing to has been unfaithful.

The guy Lorde sings to has apparently lied to another woman about his fondness of the beach, and she claims she does her makeup in someone else’s car. It really could go either of two ways. The guy has cheated on her and isn’t being truthful with the other woman, or she’s having an affair with a guy who isn’t truthful with his own partner. Either way, she wants to come grab her things from his house.

This is all speculation and we won’t know the full story until “Green Light” is released tomorrow. Until then, we’ll have to play the guessing game, because Lorde is one beautifully mysterious woman.
