Lorde spoke about the heartache that inspired her incredible new song “Green Light”

We love hearing about the stories behind the songs, and now Lorde has told of the heartache behind her incredible new song “Green Light.”

You may have missed it, but yesterday (March 2nd) Lorde shared her brand new song “Green Light,” and it’s INCREDIBLE. The track, which was co-written and co-produced by Jack Antonoff of Bleachers (Jack has also written with Taylor Swift and is Lena Dunham’s BF, fyi), along with Joel Little and Frank Dukes, is a pulsing and hypnotic slice of ’90s dance-pop and we can’t get enough of it.

The singer had been teasing the track, which is the first taste of her upcoming second album Melodrama, all week, with pop-up projections and speakers blasting out snippets. What’s more, Lorde also shared the video for the song, too! Watch it below.

Now Lorde has spoken about the heartache that inspired the song, and it sounds like it was a pretty hard situation.

Speaking to Zane Lowe on Beats 1 on Apple Music (via Pitchfork), Lorde said that it wasn’t something she was actually familiar with writing about before.

"It took me a while to be able to figure out how to write about that. It was my first major heartbreak. And the song is really about those moments kind of immediately after your life changes and about all the silly little things that you gravitate towards," she said. "I say, 'She thinks you love the beach, you’re such a liar.' What the fuck, she thinks you like the beach?! You don’t like the beach! It’s those little stupid things. It sounds so happy and then the lyrics are so intense obviously. And I realized I was like, 'how come this thing is coming out so joyous sounding?' And I realized this is that drunk girl at the party dancing around crying about her ex boyfriend who everyone thinks is a mess. "That’s her tonight and tomorrow she starts to rebuild. And that’s the song for me."

To us, this sounds a bit like Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own” and any sad breakup banger is a-okay with us, tbh.

Lorde also spoke about how growing up had shaped her upcoming album Melodrama, too.

“I moved out of home and all of a sudden I was kind of figuring out who am I when I’m alone? Who am I when I’m doing things just for myself? And I feel like you can really hear that on this record,” she said. “I had to tell the truth so starkly to myself and to my friends and people around me. It’s an amazing feeling. It’s amazing actually listening to this body of work and being like, “wow, that is that year of my life in all of its kind of glory and disgusting…” All the gross moments, all great moments. It’s really special for me to listen to.”

Lorde’s second album Melodrama is expected for release later this year (we’re hearing rumors of June). “Green Light” is  available to stream and download now.
