Lorde apologized for saying that being friends with Taylor Swift is like “having a friend with an autoimmune disease”

Following a new interview, Lorde has apologized for comments she made about her friendship with Taylor Swift.

The singer, who recently released her second album Melodrama, made the analogy during an interview with The Guardian, where she said that having a mega famous friend was a bit like having a friend who has allergies or a friend with an autoimmune disease.

“It’s like having a friend with very specific allergies. There are certain places you can’t go together. Certain things you can’t do,” she said. “There are these different sets of considerations within the friendship. It’s like having a friend with an autoimmune disease.”

Of course, we know that Lorde and Taylor are good friends, with Taylor even hosting an epic 20th birthday celebration for Lorde last year. What’s more, Lorde joined Taylor on her 1989 world tour as a special guest (much to fans’ delight). The musicians also work with the same producer, Lena Dunham’s partner and Bleachers frontman Jack Antonoff.

In the interview, Lorde explains that because she and her famous friends have a unique shared experience, they can better support each other.

“It’s an element of wanting to stick together,” she said. “Because it can be so scary to do this. These friendships, they’re about having a hand put on your shoulder by someone who knows. They’re about hearing, ‘I’ve done it, too.’”

Despite the comments not intentionally holding malice, one Twitter user pointed out how Lorde’s words could be taken as a slight, especially when considering one of Taylor’s friends, Selena Gomez, does actually have an autoimmune disease.

Soon after the tweet was sent, the New Zealand-born singer replied, apologizing.

"didn't mention taylor, but regardless, i fucked up & that was really insensitive. i'm sorry 🌹"

We understand what Lorde was going for with her analogy, and while it may have been insensitive, we appreciate that she spoke up and apologized. As we know, we’re all human and we all make mistakes. Lorde quickly and sincerely addressing the situation gets our respect.
