Lola Kirke got bullied for having armpit hair at the Golden Globes — and her reply is empowering AF

Just when we thought we’d reached peak body positivity, in comes Lola Kirke’s armpit hair at the Golden Globes to remind us that a whole lot of people still think they can tell women what to do with their bodies.

The star of Amazon’s Mozart in the Jungle and sister of Girls actress Jemima Kirk — another woman who has dared to ditch the razor — hit the red carpet on Sunday, January 8th sporting not only a “Fuck Paul Ryan” pin, but unshaven pits.

Which shouldn’t be a big deal at all because body hair is beautiful, natural, and functional, but apparently is to a number of small-minded people on the internet — people who sent Kirke “death threats.”

"Ok! Now I'm really ready," Kirke wrote on Instagram. "Thanks to all you beautiful people who didn't send me death threats on account of my #awesome #hairyarmpits! You rule. And thank you @susanwinget for always making me feel cool and @reginaharris for my make up, @blakeerik for my hair and @andrewgn for my kickass dress!"

It’s such a bummer to hear that people still have such an insane reaction to women sporting natural hair. But for those of us who are ready to ditch patriarchal beauty norms and — at least in terms of our bodies — do what makes us happy, it’s great to have a role model like Kirke rocking the red carpet.
