The upcoming Wolverine movie is all about ~family~ and that’s a twist we didn’t see coming
Hugh Jackman’s final turn as Wolverine will soon hit theaters, and it’s a bittersweet moment for X-Men fans. It’s like losing a member of the superhero family — so it’s interesting that director James Mangold says Logan is a movie about family.
Mangold tells Nerdist that first and foremost, Logan is a film about family. And while it may not be family-friendly (you can basically tell that from the trailer), there is an element of that kind of film involved.
In fact, Mangold says, "One of the inspirations... was imagining a van packed with Marvel characters on the highway, and making some kind of a Little Miss Sunshine."
That’s… not exactly the vibe we get from the trailer and the synopsis, but it’s certainly interesting. Mangold continues that, “It’s a movie about fathers and sons, it’s a movie about fathers and daughters.”
So, in a way, Professor X, Logan, and little (but powerful) Laura are three generations of a family. A family with superpowers who are hunted by dark forces, but a family nonetheless.
Mangold also cites movies like Paper Moon and Bad News Bears as inspirations. These films “hit a very reluctant stressful relationship between a true child and a guy who doesn’t want to deal with having a kid around,” he says.
All of these elements sound pretty heartwarming, TBH. Still, we know there’s going to be a lot of violence in the film, too. Either way, we know Hugh Jackman’s last performance as Wolverine will have us on an emotional rollercoaster.
