YouTuber Loey Lane just shut down her body shaming haters in the best way
Internet commenters: Eek. While some of them craft thoughtful, interesting, and critical responses to subject material, most of them, to put it lightly, don’t. And when it comes to women on the Internet, commenters are quick to judge everything about them, especially regarding how they fit into conventional ideas of beauty.
Thankfully, more and more women are speaking out about body positivity and shutting their haters down. Enter: YouTuber Loey Lane.
Lane’s tackled body positivity directly, but she often does so implicitly by modeling lingerie and swimsuit hauls. Along her way to racking up 11 million views, she’s noticed that there are a lot of salty commenters fixated on her body shape. Rather than letting these commenters go unanswered, Lane serves them all in her new video “Why Fat Girls Shouldn’t Wear Bikinis,” and delivers some pretty amazing truths and critiques about body image along the way.
Lane delivers her message with a mixture of sass—”I didn’t realize there was a meeting and all of the people who were allowed to come in and decide what was attractive and what was not are now commenters on YouTube”—and seriousness, especially when it comes to her fear of people claiming that people wearing less clothes are “asking for” strangers’ judgments. We’ve got nothing but love for Lane, and for the seamless way she not only defended herself, but anybody who’s ever been on the receiving end of body shaming of any kind.
