L.L. Bean ended their unlimited returns policy, and we blame Pinterest
Don’t say it’s over, L.L. Bean! After years of offering the best, easiest return policy ever, L.L. Bean is making some changes. The outdoor gear store has long been known for how chill they are about returns. Previously, if you bought some sweet Bean boots (that are somehow always sold out!), you could make an exchange years later, no questions asked. If the stitching on your favorite shoes broke, no problem. If the sole wore out, don’t sweat. L.L. Bean always had your back. But on Friday, February 9th, the company announced that their return policy has changed.
In the new return policy, L.L. Bean will no longer take back a purchase after one year. People have mixed feelings about the change, but it’s still a very generous return policy. Most of us shoppers are aware that many stores do not accept returns after 30, 60, or sometimes 90 days. The change comes because the company believes too many people are misusing the intent of the deal. The original policy was to guarantee their craftsmanship, not to encourage people to return 30-year-old shoes purchased from a yard sale for a free new pair.
L.L. Bean claims the policy will only affect a small percentage of returns.
In a statement on their Facebook page, the company explained the change.
Personally, we blame Pinterest for L.L. Bean’s new policy.
Practically every Pinterest #OOTD consists of a cozy sweater, a puffy vest, a chunky cable-knit scarf, and yep — L.L. Bean boots. (With slouchy socks.)

Like for real, though.

Okay, we’re kidding. But L.L. Bean boots are highly sought-after shoes.
Previously, there was nothing stopping someone from continually exchanging their used pair for a new one.

L.L. Bean emphasizes that they are still prioritizing their customers, even with this change.
"If you are not 100% satisfied with one of our products, you may return it within one year of purchase for a refund. After one year, we will consider any items for return that are defective due to materials or craftsmanship," the L.L. Bean website reads.
L.L. Bean still makes a great product and still cares about its customers. A company that has been around since 1911 is certainly doing something right.
Go forth and take better care of your boots!
