Emmys 2022: Lizzo’s Acceptance Speech Includes a Powerful Message
"Let’s just tell more stories.”
Lizzo is officially an Emmy winner and one step closer to achieving EGOT status. The “About Damn Time” singer-songwriter took home the award for Outstanding Competition Program at the 74th Emmy Awards for Lizzo’s Watch Out For The Big Grrrls. The Amazon reality TV series follows Lizzo as she searches for a new group of backup dancers to join her on tour.
During her emotional acceptance speech, Lizzo thanked her Big Grrrls and called out the need to “tell more stories” in media and entertainment.
“I’m very emotional,” Lizzo tearfully began her speech. “The trophy is nice, but my emotion is for these people who are on this stage with me. The stories that they share, they’re not that unique, they just don’t get the platform telling stories. Let’s just tell more stories.”

The “Truth Hurts” star also opened up about the inspiration behind her TV show and consequently, the significance of winning an award of such stature.
“When I was a little girl, all I wanted to see was me in the media. Someone fat like me, black like me, beautiful like me,” Lizzo continued. “If I could go back and tell little Lizzo something, I’d be like, ‘you’re going to see that person, but b**** it’s going to have to be you.’ This is for my big girls.”
Lizzo’s Watch Out For The Big Grrrls is the first competition series to sweep the award from RuPaul’s Drag Race, who previously held the award since 2018. The Amazing Race, Nailed It!, Top Chef and The Voice were also in the running.
Lizzo took to social media afterwards, tweeting a celebratory selfie with her new piece of shiny hardware — tears, runny mascara and all. “This is for the BIG GRRRLS,” she tweeted.
