Lizzo Just Made BET Awards History With Well-Deserved Nominations
Amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the BET Awards will be going virtual this year for the first time ever. But that’s not even the most exciting news for the annual celebration of Black art and entertainment. Lizzo has already made BET Awards history, becoming the first artist in the show’s 20-year history to be nominated for both Best Female R&B/Pop Artist and Best Female Hip-Hop Artist in the same year.
It’s no secret that Lizzo has been absolutely killing it the past few years, but this moment is certainly an extra sweet one for the rapper/singer/flutist extraordinaire. Billboard reported the news ahead of the June 28th show, adding that on top of the already impressive achievement, the “Juice” singer has already beat the boys here, too; no male artist has ever secured noms in both of the corresponding male categories in the same year.
Of course, in both BET award categories, Lizzo has some seriously stiff competition.

In the Best Female R&B/Pop Artist category, she is up against H.E.R., Kehlani, Jhene Aiko, Summer Walker, and Beyoncé, who has won the award a whopping 10 times (!), including the last six years in a row.
In the Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, Lizzo is up against Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, Nicki Minaj, Doja Cat, and Saweetie. So these categories are pretty much a straight line-up of our favorite women artists, which means we’ll no doubt have to tune in to see how it all unfolds live.
Whether Lizzo takes home the honors or not, we’re simply proud of her for making music history with every turn. Sending her all our congratulations as we not-so-patiently await the live show, which will air on CBS, BET, and BET HER on Sunday, June 28th at 8 p.m. ET.
