All those times Lizzie McGuire (and Hilary Duff) totally got us
Yes, Hilary Duff has a new song out and yes, it’s awesome. The synth-y “Sparks” is getting major props from fans and critics. Refinery29 has officially labeled it “the summer jam” and Nylon flat-out calls it “crazy amazing.” The song, which will appear on her upcoming album, was co-written by Tove Lo and produced by Bloodshy, the same dude behind Britney Spears’ “Toxic.” It’s electro-pop, it’s groovy and it’s pretty much exactly what we need to get us through the week.
Between this song, and her new TVLand series, Younger, Duff is kind of having moment. It’s about time. She just GETS us. As die-hard Lizzie McGuire fans, we’ve always known Duff —and her alter-ego—were on point. All the way back in early 2000s, our girl was telling it like it is, and saying exactly what we were thinking, especially in character.
Here’s a reminder of the best Lizzie-isms, direct from the classic series, that we still hold true today.
On deeply awkward situations: “You’re not supposed to see you teachers outside of school! It’s like seeing Santa in blue jeans.”
On love: “So, it looks like Gordo likes me. But he’s just my friend! I mean, that’s how I’ve always thought of him. So why do I feel all flustered and, and light-headed?”
On family: “My brother’s in a food coma, my parents are wearing stupid hats, and I’m acting like a goon. You know what, I’m having a blast!”
On liking the wrong person: “Knowing that someone’s wrong for you doesn’t change the way you feel.”
On doling out advice: “Oh, I’ve got plenty of advice! Just nothin’ I can say out loud.”
On surviving a crappy day: “I wanna run home and hide in my bedroom under the covers with hot cocoa and Mr. Snuggles.”
Aaahhh, Lizzie McGuire (and Hilary Duff) can still make our day a little bit better.
