Disney’s live-action “Little Mermaid” is HAPPENING, and Lin-Manuel Miranda is going under the sea
In the room where it happens? More like UNDER THE SEA, WHERE IT HAPPENS.
Disney has gotten hold of almost-EGOT Lin-Manuel Miranda, and they are never letting go. The brilliant mind behind Hamilton, who also happens to be writing the songs for Disney’s Moana, and also starring in the upcoming Mary Poppins sequel, is re-teaming with Mickey Mouse once again. Miranda is going to start flipping his fins, and we know he’s going to get VERY far.
According to Deadline, who first broke the news, Miranda has been tapped to work on the upcoming live-action Little Mermaid (not to be confused with the other live-action Little Mermaid).
That’s not the only big news, though. Miranda is actually teaming with OG Little Mermaid song-superstar, Alan Menken, and the two are going to write the songs and music TOGETHER. Okay, think about the fact that Menken already won an Oscar for the music in Little Mermaid (Best Original song, “Under the Sea”), and now add in Miranda to the mix, and seriously, this is going to be such sweet, sweet music to our ears.
It’ll also probably be one of the best things we ever see with our eyes, too. Per Deadline, Miranda is also producing the movie, and though he’s not going to write it himself, he is overseeing the story.
There’s also the sheer fact that Disney is making a LIVE-ACTION LITTLE MERMAID. The movie has long been in development, Disney’s just been taking their sweet time bringing everyone’s favorite feisty red-head to the big screen. It’s thought that this new movie will combine songs from the original 1989 film, the Broadway musical, and of course NEW songs too.
And let’s go ahead and call it now, this will be the best movie ever made. If you need proof, remember last week when Miranda actually started singing songs from The Little Mermaid — both the animated movie and the Broadway show — on Disney Animation’s Instagram, and you were like “Hey, this is a good idea, let’s make more of this happen.” Clearly someone else was thinking that, too.
