Listen to “Remember Me” from “Coco” before (or after) Miguel serenades us at the 2018 Oscars
Even though the Oscars celebrate the past year’s films, at points they feel more like the Grammys with all of their musical performances. This year, the musical lineup includes five live performances of original songs from movies. Included in that lineup is the song, “Remember Me,” which Miguel will perform at the 2018 Oscars. The song comes from Pixar’s Coco, and it will be the sweetest song of the night.
You’re probably used to hearing Miguel smoothly singing pop/R&B songs about “Luke Skywalkin’” on his haters, but “Remember Me” has a totally different sound. The Oscar-nominated song that Miguel will perform also has parts in Spanish. For those parts, Mexican singer Natalia Lafourcade will join Miguel on stage. The two will also be joined by Mozart in the Jungle star, Gael García Bernal, according to Harper’s Bazaar. The other musical performers at the 2018 Oscars include Mary J. Blige, Sufjan Stevens, Keala Settle, and more.
The beautiful lyrics to “Remember Me” serve as a reminder that people remain in each other’s hearts. Even if they’re not physically together. It’s the perfect song for Coco, which tells the story of a boy — also named Miguel — who ends up in the Land of the Dead after a Día de los Muertos celebration goes awry. The film celebrates Miguel’s Mexican heritage and the culture’s customs in a lovely — and fun — way.
Listen to “Remember Me” now to pump yourself up for the performance.
Warning: it might make you cry.

Since Coco celebrates Mexican heritage, Miguel is the perfect singer to perform “Remember Me” with Lafourcade and García Bernal. In an episode of VICELAND‘s series, “Earthworks,” Miguel traveled to Michoacán, Mexico, to get in touch with his roots. “What I appreciate most about my Latino heritage is that I have a really strong sense of family,” the R&B singer told Vice.
It sounds like Miguel might relate to Coco‘s messages about a family’s everlasting bond.
It’s hard not to tear up while watching Miguel (the character) visit his ancestors in the Land of the Dead during the movie.

In addition to “Remember Me’s” nomination for Best Original Song, Coco earned a nomination for Best Animated Feature. If the song wins an Oscar, the songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez — who also wrote “Let it Go” — will win the award. The famed songwriting pair wrote “Remember Me” in two versions which both play out in the film. As Anderson-Lopez told Deadline, “At its core, its a message of goodbye.” She added, “It could be taken many ways.”
No matter what happens at the 2018 Oscars, Coco has won our hearts. We can’t wait for Miguel’s performance at the Oscars later tonight.
