So weird we can’t get enough: Lionel Richie’s ‘Hello’ video without music
If you haven’t noticed, people do strange things in music videos. In the context of the song they (sometimes) make sense, but a lot of times people are either dancing or being overly emotive or generally behaving in ways that wouldn’t fly if they weren’t in a music video. That absurdity is something Austrian sound designer Mario Wienerroither has been capturing perfectly in his series, “Musicless Music Video,” which is exactly what it sounds like.
Wienerroither takes a video, removes the music, and adds his own sound effects and voices. He’s done Rihanna, Britney Spears, Sia, and Elvis, plus tons of others. The effect is so, so very strange.
Case in point, his latest: “Hello”, Lionel Richie’s 1984 hit. Wienerroither keeps the super dramatic ballad-style greeting throughout, but Richie is less swoon-worthy and more an awkward college professor as he keeps trying to get the attention of a student he digs with one word: “HELLOOOOO.” It’s hilarious, a little creepy, and utterly re-watchable.
