We are *NOT* feeling this LinkedIn interview advice

In a recent essay featured on LinkedIn, executive recruiter and career counselor Bruce Hurwitz blessed us with an interview tip that is sure to have employers calling you as soon as you’ve left the office. Gone are the days of the importance of a well-rounded education and years of hard-earned experience. What really affects your interview the most is whether or not you’re sporting an engagement ring on your finger!

There’s no reason to bother with paying attention to valuable advice that will actually shape your future! All you need to do is accept archaic social constructs and “lose the rock”! That carbon on your finger will give employers the impression that you might not need the money, or that the company might not be able to afford you.

“When a man sees that ring, he immediately assumes you are high maintenance,” writes Bruce.

If that isn’t enough to get your blood boiling, he also suggests, “when the woman at the office who has the largest diamond on her finger sees that ring, she will realize that if you are hired she will fall to second place and will, therefore, not like you.”  Is it possible to vomit out of anger? Because that might be a thing.

Just no, Bruce. This guy doesn’t know how wrong he is. His claim suggests that women would go so far as to rank themselves and others by the size of the diamond on their finger. Women have more to worry about than being catty. Why not help us face workplace discrimination, sexual harassment, unequal pay, lack of affordable daycare, or inadequate family leave?!

Women, let’s stand together. Don’t fall victim to those who think our sole purpose is to compete with each other. Don’t let the Bruces of the world get you down!
