Lindsey Vonn got emotional talking about her late grandfather, and now we’re crying too

Skier Lindsey Vonn is ready to compete in the 2018 Olympics. Throughout her career, she’s faced countless crashes and injuries, including one that kept her out of the 2014 Olympics in Sochi altogether. But Lindsey Vonn is back for another winter games. And this time, she’s a top contender: The skier just won two World Cup downhill races in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. She’s hoping that her hot streak will continue through the winter games. At the 2018 Olympics, Lindsey Vonn is competing in the downhill, super-G, and combined event.

Lindsey Vonn also faced some more personal struggles before PyeongChang. In November of 2017, her grandfather passed away. During a press conference on Friday, February 9th, Vonn spoke about how she’s keeping his memory alive at the 2018 Olympics.

“It’s really hard for me not to cry,” Vonn said, wiping away tears. I want so badly to do well for him, and I miss him so much. He’s been such a big part of my life, and I really had hoped that he would be alive to see me. But I know he’s watching. And I know that he’s gonna help me. And I’m gonna win for him.”

Lindsey Vonn’s grandfather is the person who taught her how to ski.

"You taught me to be tough, to be kind, and above all, to ski fast," Vonn wrote on Instagram. "Now, every time i ski down the mountain I know you'll be there with me. I'm proud to be your granddaughter and I will think of you always. I will race for you in Korea and I will try as hard as I can to win for you."

Lindsey Vonn and her grandfather were incredibly close.

It’s clear he was so, so proud of her.

Sending you love, Lindsey. We know your grandfather will be with you every step of the way.
