Lin-Manuel Miranda shared the final “HamilDrop,” and it features Barack Obama
In December 2016, Lin-Manuel Miranda delivered The Hamilton Mixtape, which was basically the Hamilton soundtrack (plus some deleted songs) performed by artists like Ashanti, Kelly Clarkson, Alicia Keys, and Miguel (to name a few). Last year Miranda announced that there would be no Hamilton Mixtape Part II, but that he would release a new version of a song from the musical every month until December 2018. He called these the HamilDrops. Miranda kept his word and on December 20th, 2018, he released the final HamilDrop, a take on “One Last Time,” featuring former forever president Barack Obama.
Obama is a huge Hamilton fan: he asked Miranda to perform the song at his farewell tribute at the White House in early 2017 (you can watch that moment here, but be aware, you’ll probably cry), so it makes sense that our 44th president would lend his voice to the emotional song.
Titled, “One Last Time (44 remix),” we’re sad to say that Obama doesn’t rap or sing on the track, but he does recite George Washington’s 1796 farewell address just before Washington was about to leave office. Aside from Obama’s spoken word interlude, the entire song got a gospel reimagining thanks to vocals from Bebe Winans and Christopher Jackson, and dare we say it, but this Hamilton remix song is the most presidential thing we’ve heard in almost two years.
