15 iconic fictional friendships that inspire major squad goals
squad goals (skwod gohls) noun: an inspirational term describing what you want your friend group to aspire to; a statement of how great your friend group already is.
The term “squad goals” took the world by storm last year, and it isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. With good reason! You can say it to admire another friendship, or say it to brag about your own besties. Or you can do both!
From Taylor Swift’s girl gang to Amy Schumer’s posse, squad goals are everywhere you look — especially on TV and in movies. Here are some of our favorite fictional friendships that inspire MAJOR squad goals.
1. Thelma and Louise from “Thelma and Louise.”
These two take the phrase “ride or die” to the next level. Thelma and Louise prove that real friends would do anything for each other — and we mean anything.
2. Leslie and Ann from “Parks and Recreation.”
Enthusiastically loving and endlessly supportive, these BFFs are the perfect example of what good can come from lifting each other up. Waffles and compliments go a long way!
3. Romy and Michele from “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.”
Romy and Michele have each other’s backs in every sense of the word, whether it’s with their amazing fashion choices, incredible dance moves, or Romy literally removing the magnets the mean girls put on Michele’s back as a prank.
4. Lucy and Ethel from “I Love Lucy.”
When you look up “friendship goals” in the dictionary, there’s a photo of Lucy and Ethel stuffing their faces with chocolate. They’re the original BFFs, the most coveted #squad, and the definition of goals.
5. Josie, Melody, and Valerie from “Josie and the Pussycats.”
You know you’re besties when: You have the only bus pass in Riverdale that features not one, not two, but three people in your photo. Now that’s a display of friendship!
6. Meredith and Cristina from “Grey’s Anatomy.”
Meredith and Cristina go beyond being best friends; they’re each other’s person. And they’re an excellent representation of what a real female friendship is: loving, inspiring, and strong.
7. Samantha, Roberta, Chrissy, and Teeny from “Now and Then.”
Friends that host séances together, stay together. Now and Then is another classic example of the power that decades-long friendships can have on your life.
8. Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia from “Golden Girls.”
What do you get when you put three widows and a divorcée under one roof in Miami? An endless supply of love, laughter, and antics. And of course, friendship.
9. Annie, Brenda, and Elise from “The First Wives Club.”
Speaking of divorcées, it doesn’t get any better than this trio of women. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, but when she teams up with her scorned friends, some pretty great things come of it.
10. Rachel, Monica, and Phoebe from “Friends.”
The Friends characters had their fair share of romantic pairings throughout their 10 seasons, but the best and strongest relationship was the friendship the girls shared. They took each other in, offered shoulders to cry on and, like the theme song suggests, they were simply there for each other.
11. Maura and Kate from “Sisters.”
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are constantly raising the bar on their friendship, both IRL and on screen. We especially heart their latest fictional duo, Maura and Kate, and their sweet in-sync dance moves.
12. Jess and Cece from “New Girl.”
In most TV friendships, the popular girl and the quirky girl don’t run in the same circles. But not Jess and Cece! They’ve been besties since they were kids, and they’ll be besties for life.
13. Carmen, Lena, Tibby, and Bridget from “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.”
We heart this fictional foursome not only because they all click together as a group, but also because they all have unique individual friendships with each other. That’s friendship on another level.
14. Abbi and Ilana from “Broad City.”
Abbi and Ilana complete each other. Abbi always knows the right advice Ilana needs to hear, and Ilana has an endless string of compliments for Abbi. They’re perfectly matched!
15. C.C. and Hillary from “Beaches.”
C.C. and Hillary couldn’t be more different, but they have one thing in common: their dedication to each other.
