Here's why Adele had to call 1,000 times
Where were you the first time you heard “Hello” by Adele? The singer’s knockout single was one of 2015’s standout moments. She made us feel all of the emotions, inspired one of Saturday Night Live’s greatest sketches of the year and spawned parody video after parody video. Like this one from College Humor.
“The Other Side of Adele’s ‘Hello’” is not your average “Hello” parody video. It’s so much more than that. It’s like a re-telling of sorts, answering the questions burning in everyone’s mind: Where is “the other side” exactly? And who is on the other end of the phone?
The video mashes up scenes from a busy boardroom and clips from Adele’s “Hello” music video. The story centers around a man whose phone keeps ringing. At first you’re like, three phone calls? Why not just send a text? But then you realize who’s calling. It’s Adele.
She wants to chat with her ex for a bit. To know how he’s doing and to see if after all these years, he’d like to meet. But the call keeps cutting out, because she has pretty bad cell service. It almost sounds like she’s talking on an old flip phone or something.
“I just don’t understand why she didn’t send an email at 3am, like a normal person,” the man says of Adele.
The funny video makes us look at Adele’s story a little differently. If all you saw was the man’s side of the conversation, you might think, Wow, this girl needs to let up a little bit, and maybe take a hint that he’s not interested anymore. But when we listen to Adele sing, we feel her pain through her lyrics, because we’ve been in her emotionally-draining shoes too. Still, it’s a funny look at what might be on the other end of that phone.
Watch the vid ‘til the end and you’ll see Adele’s ex reveal why he doesn’t cut off all communication with her. It makes perfect sense.
