These unicorn tears-inspired candy apples will add fairy tale magic to your Halloween treat
Unicorn tears are rare, magical, and they just so happen to make the perfect addition to classic candy apples. This treat is sticky-sweet and totally fairy tale-inspired. The first bite will be messy, but you won’t regret it after you taste the white chocolate, caramel, and, of course, those sugary unicorn tears.
With apples, candy melts, and neon food coloring, these seasonal snacks are easy to make at home. They’re perfect for a unicorn-themed Halloween party or to make on Halloween night with friends if, by society’s annoying standards, you’re a little too old to go trick-or-treating. Taste the rainbow with this delicious recipe:
Unicorn Tears Candy Apples
6 medium granny smith apples
Candy apple sticks
1 lbs. white candy melts
3 cups sugar, divided
1 ½ cup light corn syrup, divided
1 ½ cup water, divided
Various shades gel food color
1. Remove stems from apple and wash and dry well. Press sticks into center of apples where stems were removed. Set aside.
2. Melt candy melts according to package directions in a 4-cup glass measuring cup or medium glass bowl. Tip measuring cup to one side and swirl apples through melted candy to coat sides of apples, leaving about 1 inch of exposed apple uncoated around the stick. Set on a piece of parchment until completely set, about 5 minutes.
3. Meanwhile, combine 1 cup sugar, ½ cup each water and corn syrup, and 2 drops desired food coloring in a medium heavy-bottomed saucepot. Bring to a boil over high heat stirring occasionally until sugar dissolves. Continue to heat until mixture reaches 300 to 310 degrees. Remove from heat and carefully slowly pour into a 2-cup glass measuring cup.
4.Slowly drizzle candy over apples, making sure candy is just touching the exposed apple to anchor candy. Repeat process with remaining sugar, water, corn syrup, and food coloring twice more. Start each subsequent drizzle slightly higher on the apple to make sure candy coating adheres to apple. Set aside to cool completely, about 10 minutes.
