Brothers Michael and Neil Fletcher of Ontario, Canada were in their local woods hunting grouse when they noticed a much larger bird that appeared to be caught in a trap. As they approached the fallen bird, they quickly realized that this wasn’t just any animal: this was a bald eagle!

Here’s Michael moments before the encounter.

Bald eagles were only recently taken off of the U.S.’s endangered species and are still very rare to see in the wild, especially at eye level. As birds of prey, they usually stay out of sight. Michael and Neil were careful as they walked toward the bald eagle in the woods. “The bird was pretty calm,” Michael told BuzzFeed Canada. “It was probably tired from trying to fight the trap.”

The brothers worked together to remove the bald eagle from the trap — its talon was caught, and they weren’t sure how long the bird had been stuck there.

Before setting the majestic creature free, Michael and Neil snapped the most epic selfie of all time.

Michael said that the bald eagle’s eyes were incredible. “There’s something about them,” he said. “And the size of it — the bird is huge.” Despite the mass of the eagle, Michael and Neil managed to remove it safely from the trap. These two were really great about documenting the whole process. Here’s a video of the eagle flying to freedom.

I highly suggest pairing a viewing of this clip with the song “Born Free” by Andy Williams. Just trust me on this one, ok?
