When there’s a will, there’s a way. And if there’s a tutorial online, even better. A few years ago, a single mom named Cara Brookins built an entire house with no prior experience, all thanks to a few videos she saw on YouTube. That means that any excuse we currently have for not trying to accomplish something is now null and void.

Brookins, who’s currently 45, isn’t just physically strong, as you assume home-builders would need to be — she’s emotionally strong, as well.

Having married multiple times, she ended things with her husband after he was diagnosed with extreme paranoid schizophrenia. Years later, she left her second husband after he became incredibly abusive towards her and her family.

With four children to look after — aged 17, 15, 11, and 2, at the time — you might assume that Brookins would accept the fact that they’d all have to share a room based on the income she was bringing in.

Instead, Brookins decided to take matters into her own hands, and build a sturdy home for her family — all by herself.

Her story was picked up by a bunch of sources who found her to be incredibly inspiring. Really, Brookins is such an incredible role model, proving that anyone can rise up from an awful situation.

It turns out that Brookins started the project back in 2008 — and, part of the reason why she was so determined to make this work was because she thought that the message of rebuilding something for herself was too powerful to ignore.

Together with the support of her children, Brookins handled everything from the windows to the gas installation. It’s such a beautiful, powerful story.

Speaking of “story,” Brookins wrote a book about the experience. Called Rise, it goes into detail about how Brookins refused to be victimized.

On Amazon, it’s already risen to the #1 best-seller in the Do-It-Yourself Home Improvement category, and it hasn’t even been released yet — it actually comes out on January 24th.

We’re so glad that Brookins decided to share her experience, since she’s definitely a lady we can all look up to.
