The Boy Scouts of America announced it will now accept openly transgender members – and a 9-year-0ld New Jersey boy became the first transgender Boy Scout to join.

Joe Maldonado first tried to join Boy Scouts in October, but was asked to leave after other parents in the Secaucus-based pack complained, according to Joe’s mother, Kristie Maldonado.

After the Boy Scouts announced a policy change to allow transgender boys into the program, Maldonado said she decided to take her son to the Maplewood, New Jersey program.

At Joe’s first Boy Scout meeting, pack leader Kyle Hacker taught Joe the Cub Scout salute and oath.
