Last month, a man got married to his smartphone in Las Vegas, and he had a very interesting reason — to make a point about society’s obsession with staying connected all the time.

“If we’re going to be honest about ourselves, we connect with our phones on so many emotional levels. We look to it for solace, to calm us down, to put us to sleep, to ease our minds, and to me, that’s also what a relationship is about. So, in a sense, my smartphone has been my longest relationship. That’s why I decided to see what it was like to actually marry a phone,” Aaron Chervenak said in a video about the smartphone marriage.

He contacted a chapel in Vegas to see if they’d be willing to perform the ceremony — not only were they willing, they were actually pretty excited, and they allowed him to film the entire thing.

“I’m trying to ask the hard questions of myself as to what this relationship means and I’m trying to go as far as I can to explore that,” Chervenak said.

While the video seems pretty funny in tone, he makes some good points about our reliance on our phones, and it’s a fun video to watch. He doesn’t take himself too seriously, and he knows the wedding isn’t actually legal.

“What I hope my wedding will do is to somehow act as a symbolic gesture to show how precious our phones are becoming in our daily lives and to hopefully get others to ask that same question of themselves,” Chervenak said.

Here’s the video in its entirety:
