“Remember to breathe” is a piece of advice that totally sounds like non-advice. After all, how could we forget to breathe when it’s something our bodies do naturally? Yet, we have to admit that this advice does come in handy when it’s referring to deep breathing. That’s why we’re pumped to hear that a new app called “Breathe” will be added to the Apple Watch later this year (as a free upgrade, no less).

According to Harvard Medical School, deep breathing refers to when air fully fills your lungs and makes your lower belly rise. This type of breathing supports full oxygen exchange within your body, which can help slow your heartbeat, keep your blood pressure stable, and can even help you deal with anxiety. Dr. Mladen Golubic adds, “You can influence asthma; you can influence chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; you can influence heart failure. There are studies that show that people who practice breathing exercises and have those conditions — they benefit.

So yes, it would seem that “remember to breathe” is pretty great advice.

Following in the footsteps of apps like Headspace and Calm.com, it sounds like Breathe will be inspiring us to take time for self-care (and maybe even meditation?). Because self-care doesn’t have to be anything extravagant like a lavish spa trip or an expensive purchase in the name of treatin’ yo’ self. Instead, self-care can come in the form of taking a moment to sit down and breathe.

Though Breathe will soon be available only on the Apple Watch, we hope that it will spread to the company’s other devices in the not-so-distant future. Even if this isn’t the case, we’d love it if this type of news reminded everyone that breathing is a badass way to cope with stress.
