This over-the-top Starbucks gift card will cost you extra
If you thought your stocking stuffers game was pretty weak this year, then think “Starbucks” when holiday season 2016 rolls around next year.
This year, Starbucks went above and beyond in the world of gift cards, offering its highly-coveted Brilliant cards for another year.
Encrusted in Swarovski crystals, the dark blue, wallet-sized card costs $200 and comes pre-loaded with just $50. That’s a lot of cups of coffee (or tea, if you’re into that sort of thing).
The card went on sale on December 14 and very quickly sold out because who doesn’t want a ridiculously swanky gift card to one of America’s most popular coffee chains? But you can purchase them for resell on eBay, where the original price tag has been jacked up by about $50 in some cases.
According to USA Today, gift cards are always a big seller at Starbucks this time of year with the company reporting that in 2014, 2.5 million gift cards were sold on Christmas Eve in the U.S. and Canada alone at about a rate of 1700 cards per minute. (Read: Last minute gift-shopping is alive and well.) In fact, $25 billion dollars have been loaded onto Starbucks gift cards since they debuted a decade and a half ago.
If you’re pretty broken up over having missed the opportunity to give (or receive) a Brilliant Starbucks card, worry not. The company also has a line of limited edition Swarovski coffee tumblrs adorned in black, red, or white crystals (the 64oz black crystal tumbler costs $124.95) and two gold Swarovski cups that are just decadent.
After all, luxury should start with your early morning caffeine boost, right?
