Seth Meyers and Amy Poehler call out sexist sports coverage. Really!
Last night, Seth Meyers and Amy Poehler gave us the ‘Weekend Update’ reunion we’ve all wanted since they gave up the desk. Poehler appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers to revive their “Really?! With Seth and Amy” segment, and dropped some knowledge on sexism in sports reporting.
The segment was in response to Sports Illustrated contributor Andy Benoit’s tweet saying “women’s sports in general” are “not worth watching.” The tweet came when Sports Illustrated mentioned him in a Vine from the England v. Norway game in the Women’s World Cup quarterfinal round. But Amy and Seth were having none of Benoit’s misogyny.
“You can’t give it up for a group of women who are representing the US against the world, yet I bet you are the same guy who sits inside on a nice day and watches the NFL Draft,” Seth says.
Amy goes on, “You’ll play six hours of pre-Kentucky Derby footage but you cant broadcast women’s soccer. You think people would rather watch someone talk about hats than watch some badass American bitches take down Colombia?!”
As usual, the dynamic duo is totally right. Women’s sports get no respect from the major networks and sports magazines, despite being just as awesome as male counterparts. And the ridiculousness of that double standard couldn’t be expressed better than with a few really exasperated rounds of “Really?!”
