It looks like 73-year-old real estate mogul and convicted felon Robert Durst is finally getting tossed in prison. Today a judge by the name of Kirk D. Engelhardt sentenced Durst to 7 years in a minimum security federal prison on the outskirts of Los Angeles at Terminal Island. There he’ll wait formal arraignment on the murder charges of his confidante, Susan Berman, which are set to take place on August 18.

He was brought to court for this murder all the way back in 2000, when prosecutors claim he killed Berman in an attempt to silence her and what she knew about the disappearance of his wife 18 years earlier.

For the past year Durst has been held in New Orleans on gun charges. He was in possession of a .38-caliber revolver. These charges are unrelated to the Berman murder, however. This arrest came one day before the series finale of The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst, a documentary on HBO. The program covered the police investigations of multimillionaire Durst, including the killing of his Texas neighbor in 2003, which he was tried and acquitted for, as well as his wife’s 1982 disappearance in New York (the incident which Berman presumably was killed over).

In the last episode of the HBO series, Durst didn’t know the microphone was on, and he said in reference to his wife and Susan Berman, “What the hell did I do?… Killed them all, of course.”

I truly, truly want to express my statement that I am not guilty of killing Susan Berman,” Durst said to the judge, and he said he has wanted to get to L.A. for a year so he can file his not guilty plea. Durst’s lawyer also claims he is innocent and he expresses his concern for Durst’s health (Durst was brought in and out of the hearing in a wheelchair).

When Durst was arrested right before the HBO documentary series finale, officials found in his possession $44,000 cash, a large amount of marijuana, a fake passport, and a latex mask you might see in Mission Impossible. They think he was about to flee to Cuba.

Doesn’t sound so innocent to us.
