This tragic story of a paralyzed dog is breaking our hearts.

Genie is a dog paralyzed from her hips to her hind legs, and she was left on the front steps of an animal hospital in Florida because her owner could not afford the surgery she needs to get well.

The employees at the Humane Society of Tampa Bay were touched, and posted a photo of Genie, a sweet-faced, long-haired black and brown dog on Facebook along with the crushing note, which reads:

“We will do our best to heal her body and mend her grieving heart,” writes the Humane Society of Tampa Bay, along with a call for donations. “We will give her a second chance and find her a loving home.”

Thankfully, this story has a happy ending: After the handwritten note went viral, the internet responded to the animal hospital’s plea, raising $20,849.

“Genie is feeling more relaxed and secure and continues to be very brave in the face of her circumstance,” the Humane Society of Tampa Bay writes in an update. “She especially enjoys trips outside to sniff around and meet new friends.”

To stay updated on Genie’s progress, like the animal hospital on Facebook. We hope she finds a good home soon!
