A lot was revealed at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend. No franchise or fandom was excluded—including The Vampire Diaries. Some of the news was good, but some of it was bittersweet.

At SDCC, The Vampire Diaries announced that the upcoming Season 8 will be its last.

Major tear. But the cast came together for a group interview to talk about both the past and the future of the show. They discussed which props they want to bring home from set, which relationships they wish had happened, and even teased some potential spoilers about the new season.

They also hinted that Elena, played by Nina Dobrev, will make another appearance in the flesh before everything ends.

Executive producer Julie Plec said Dobrev made an “emotional promise” (whatever that is?) to her that she would be back for one final appearance. And we really, really hope that happens.

“There’s a dozen and more familiar faces that we miss,” said Plec. “This is a year about celebrating what the series has been and what it’s felt like to be together and to love these characters. We will find interesting and creative ways—whether it’s through memory, or flashback, or some other surprise—we’ll find ways to just say hello and goodbye to those people again.”
