Nefeli Steirou is our Illustrator of the Week!
Nefeli “Nef” Steirou (aka Nefste) is a Jane of all trades. The 28-year-old Athens-based artist has studied law, set and costume design, and fashion design, and has even worked behind the scenes in theater and film. But for all her very many accomplishments, it is her illustrations that truly make our hearts sing. Master of a gorgeous, sunny style, Nef’s drawings are a ton of fun, and we can’t get enough of them. Basically, her art is just all kinds of lovely — which is why she’s our Illustrator of the Week!

No pressure, but describe your art: Colorful and girly, I guess — I haven’t ever really thought of describing it, so this is kind of hard.
What inspires you to make things: People around me and pop culture. And sometimes clothes I imagine and want to have or make, so I draw them just to get them out of my head.
Your favorite thing(s) to draw: My imaginary girls, and flowers, mostly.
Medium of choice: I like experimenting with different mediums, but you can’t beat pencil and paper. For me it all starts there.
The first time you knew you wanted to be an artist: As long as I can remember, I wanted to create. But I didn’t realize I could hold a pencil and actually draw something until my mid-twenties.
Proudest achievement so far: I recently won a fashion design contest, which really gave me a confidence boost and made me consider designing my own clothing line, sometime in the future.
Music you listen to while you work: Taylor Swift mostly. And if I’m being honest, just “Shake It Off” on repeat. Sleater Kinney as well. Also, lately I’ve been binge-watching Scandal.
Your most prized possession: I like to think of myself as a collector rather than a consumer, so probably my shoe and bag collection that I barely use. (I’d say my cat, but I prefer thinking of her as a partner.)
Your personal hero: Wes Anderson. I love the worlds he creates in his films and his uniquely flawed yet adorable characters. Joss Whedon for the way he portrays women and for being so vocal about women’s issues. All the women currently challenging the conventional beauty standards, while being amazing creatives, like Lena Dunham, Tess Munster, and Mindy Kaling. Amy Poehler, for being a perfect human being.
The last thing to make you giggle: My cat (I don’t go out much).
Current project(s): Currently I’m working on opening an Etsy shop and also thinking of creating a clothing line. I’m also working on a friend’s film that I’m really into, telling people to buy things through my blog, and just making things like crazy.
