In news that will come as a surprise to approximately zero people, a recent study found that work stress is a serious problem, especially for millennials. According to a survey conducted by Accountemps, 60 percent of the 1,000 workers polled said work-related pressure has increased in the last five years. No age group is immune — 59 percent of professionals between the ages of 35 and 54 reported feeling overwhelmed at work, compared to 35 percent of workers ages 55 and older.

The problem impacts one generation more than any other demographic — 64 percent of millennials say they’re overwhelmed at work.

The biggest sources of stress are looming deadlines, the struggle to find a work-life balance, and managers who are nearly impossible to please.


Although work-related stress will always be part of a professional’s life, there are ways to combat the problem. In a press release from Accountemps, the firm provides several tips to make your workday more manageable.

For example, instead of attempting to multitask, stay organized and focus on one key project at a time. Accountemps also recommends seeking advice and help from your manager if your workload has become daunting and overwhelming. And, take a brief break if stress begins to consume you during the workday — step outside for a few minutes and sip on a decaffeinated beverage.


Work-related stress will never disappear entirely, but we don’t need to spend every single day feeling overwhelmed and anxious. Listen to the experts — multitasking isn’t always effective, but speaking up and taking the occasional breather can make a world of difference.
