Trying to save more and spend less? Here are seven (practical) tips that won't drive you insane
Do you have a dream vacation in mind? A piece of property you’d love to own some day? Are you just tired of spending more money than you should? Well, if you said “yes” to any one of these questions, we have a few tips that’ll help you save more and spend less without changing too much of your normal routine.
1Download a budgeting app or buy a budget planner.
Let’s be real. It’s flat-out eye-opening when you lay out *every* single one of your expenses in front of yourself. I bet you one whole dollar you’ll say something along the lines of, “I spent HOW MUCH on THAT?” at least twice when you do this. Save your receipts, look at your bank statements, and figure out where you can afford to slash some spending.
2Unsubscribe from retail mailing lists.
Dude, don’t torture yourself when you don’t have to! Even if you only un-subscribe from your favorite retailers for a month or two, not waking up to the latest deals and new releases in your inbox WILL save you money. If you don’t know how cute Madewell’s latest top is, you won’t feel the need to buy it — you feel?
3Start planning meals for the week, ahead of time.
Unexpected meal purchases can be one of the biggest culprits when it comes to draining your savings. If you sit down on Sunday and plan at LEAST your dinners for the week, you can not only budget how much money you’ll need for food for the week, you can also avoid spending too much money on a takeout order just because you didn’t buy enough at the grocery store.
4Avoid Target at ALL COSTS.
If you’ve been to Target, then you’ve probably also walked out of Target with two to three times more crap than you went in there for. Target is truly a mecca, but it’s also a minefield for anyone trying to save money. And if you DO have to go there for essentials like laundry detergent, or, I don’t know, a towel rack, remind yourself that NO, you do NOT need that gorgeous candle or that adorable set of stationary that you’ll use once and then promptly forget about.
5Add things to your cart while online shopping, and then EXIT OUT.
It can be a stress reliever to type in the URL of your favorite store and browse mindlessly. The important caveat is that after adding everything you’ve been eyeing to your cart, you have to hit the X on that tab and let it all go. This might *sound* hard to do, but like any habit, it’ll catch on.
6Invite friends over for drinks instead of going out.
This tip is pretty simple. We all know that instead of paying $12 for a fancy cocktail out, you could split the cost of a bottle and other ingredients among your friends for a third of the price.
7Do your nails yourself.
If you’ve fallen into the habit of getting your nails done, you might want to reconsider. I’m all about #selfcare, but you can also #selfcare literally yourself with an $8 bottle of nail polish instead of a $20-$40 manicure!
