Last week, Kate Beckinsale opened up about some hurtful and completely baffling things that director Michael Bay said about her during promotion of the movie Pearl Harbor. ICYMI Beckinsale appeared on The Graham Norton Show and talked about how Bay pretty much didn’t think she was beautiful and had no qualms about letting her (and everyone else in the world) know about it during the Pearl Harbor press junket. He even said that the reason she was cast in the role was because she “wasn’t so attractive that she would alienate the female audience.”

But wait, there’s more. He also advised her to get a trainer and work out and managed to give Beckinsale the impression that she confused Bay “because my boobs weren’t bigger than my head and I wasn’t blonde.”

In a blog on his website, Michael Bay is now responding to Beckinsale’s claims. He calls her “a fantastic actress, very funny, witty lady, sassy, speaks her mind” and says he truly respects her. He also includes a picture that shows a Pearl Harbor movie poster of Beckinsale that has been hanging over his desk for fifteen years.

Bay says he and Beckinsale are friends, and she’s a regular at his Christmas and birthday parties, chalking up the entire scandal as a reporter misconstruing her words. According to Bay, she was making light of the whole thing. (Although TBH we fail to see the humor in most of it. Just saying.) He goes on to say that “95% of lead actors in movie have trainers and drink green juice.”

We’re glad Bay took the time to clear the air. It sounds like he does indeed respect Beckinsale and maybe just didn’t think about how it sounds in press interviews when he praises male actors for their work while only commenting on a female actress’s looks. Maybe he won’t make the same mistake again. We hope not.

As for whether or not Beckinsale’s words were misconstrued, it should be pointed out that she’s told the same story in the past, most recently to Yahoo Movies.
