The journey to self-love isn’t always easy when you’re struggling with gender identify, but it can ultimately be an extremely empowering experience. So we’re thrilled to hear that LCD Soundsystem’s Gavin Russom has come out as transgender and is fully embracing who she is inside.

Gavin, who has decided to keep her name the same, says she had tried to make her gender identity known in the past by presenting herself in more feminine ways. However, she says she often found it exposed her to violence, discrimination, and transphobia.

But despite the negativity, Gavin Rayna Russom is ready to live her truth as a transgender woman.

In an interview with Pitchfork, Russom said,

Russom joined LCD Soundsytem in 2010 on their album “This Is Happening.” The group went their separate ways a year later but announced in 2016 that they had reunited. Russom said her bandmates have been “really supportive,” before acknowledging that she had overcome her own deeply embedded thoughts about gender norms.

“I’m carrying so many of these things around with me. That’s been challenging to work through — having those preconditioned societal ideas of what transgender women can do.”

Russom also hopes to inspire others through her music.

Gavin Russom will make her debut performance as a trans woman on July 13th and LCD Soundsystem’s new album drops in September.

We’re incredibly inspired by Gavin’s courage to step into her truth. We wish her all the very best. And to anyone out there having a hard time coming to terms with who they are, we support you, too. Forever and always.
