Another week, another moon phase! When the moon makes her journey, she moves from new to full and then back to new, with stops as a crescent, quarter, and gibbous moon in between. Currently, we’re in the phase between full and new moon, in what’s known as a waning quarter moon, or the last quarter moon.

Tomorrow, December 9th, marks the last quarter moon in Virgo, the sign of the virgin, and she’s asking you to step forward as your fullest self to be of service to the world. So leave your baggage at the door, grab your adventuring hat, and head out there.

The waning quarter moon is a time to check inventory and regroup.

When the moon is moving from full to new, we let go of the bullshit to make room for the good shit. During the last quarter moon, this is even more true, but with a slight twist. Though the new moon calls us to really let go of our excess baggage and what no longer serves us, the last quarter of the moon’s phase reminds us that we still have the moon’s light illuminating our path.

This is a time of practical magick, of checking in with ourselves, and of taking inventory of what we no longer need. This is a time when we let go of deadweight so we can make room for the things that need our attention most. Think selling clothing to a consignment store, cleaning your house, checking in on old patterns that may have come up, and saying no to hanging out with others so you can chill by yourself.

Virgo is all about making things happen.

The energy of the last quarter moon is paired with that of Virgo. Virgo is a mutable sign, which means it’s flexible and easily adaptable. Virgo is a practical and grounded earth sign, but as a whole is all about movement and getting things done — just not at the expense of others and not without evolving to suit whatever situation it’s currently in. In a post on Cafe Astrology, the moon phase is explained:

"We instinctually gravitate towards practical activities under the influence of a Virgo Moon. In an urge to set things right, we might easily find ourselves re-organizing and rethinking plans. Emotional satisfaction comes from solving problems, making order out of confusion, and helping others. Health matters might come into focus. We notice the smaller parts that make up the whole, and instead of letting nagging details bother us, we might work on ironing them out so that we can feel more confident moving ahead."

Today’s Last Quarter Virgo Moon is asking you to breathe into the process. It’s asking you to let go of what’s holding you back from being as efficient as possible. This moon phase is revealing things that are stopping you from working and living at your fullest potential. Pair this with Mercury Retrograde — when we get a huge lesson on slowing down and being practical — and you have the perfect recipe for really seeing what needs some TLC and what has got to go.

Virgo also asks you to step out into the world with this newly found vision and skills, so you can really be of service. But don’t worry — this doesn’t have to be anything big. It could be helping out a friend, smiling at a stranger, donating money to a good cause, giving advice, and other practical things that can make a big difference in the world.

So go ahead, step out of your comfort zone. After all, you never know what adventure awaits.
