It’s not totally about where your profile picture was taken, or how good you look in that picture. It’s not really about a specific trait—dark hair or blue eyes or whether or not you have piercings. While choosing your profile picture is important, one of the most attractive traits about your online dating profile might just be… your flawless grammar.

According to The Wall Street Journal, grammar might be a huge factor in how successful you are at making a connection via a platform like Tinder or OKCupid. In fact, when dating site Match asked over 5,000 of its U.S. users what the most important criteria was for them in judging a date, apart from hygiene, grammar was the number one choice. 88% of women and 75% of men said they cared about grammar most, putting it ahead of a prospective partner’s confidence and, somewhat surprisingly, their teeth.

But baseless snobbery isn’t the only reason why online daters find grammar important: the effort someone puts into their profile, as well as the messages they sent to other users, can reveal something about their work ethic. And while the content of your message is also important, a perceived lack of effort in the grammar department can make a person stand out in a negative way.

However, some people such as Grindr CEO Joel Simkhai don’t buy that grammar is important in online dating. As he told the WSJ: “If you’re hot and attractive to the other person, you’ll meet them. Grammar? Are you kidding?”

If nothing else, we know that a well-crafted message can make you stand out in a positive way. So, when in doubt, use proper grammar. It may just make you stand out to the person, grammar snob or no, of your dreams.
