We’ve got some super exciting news from Instagram, you guys! The photo sharing app we all use to make our brunch look majestic and our pets look even more adorable announced today that you can now hashtag emojis. Pretty cool huh?

On their blog, Instagram shared the reasoning behind the latest update, which also came with three new filters. “Over the past few years, emoji have become part of a universal visual language. And just as we share photos and videos, we use emoji to communicate emotions and feelings in ways that anyone can understand, regardless of language or background.”

Instagram is totally right that emojis have become part of our online language. They have made it into our popular culture in a really big way, playing a role in everything from ridiculously funny takes on songs and communication to larger conversations about diversity. A well placed pair of hands or side-eyeing face can say everything in just one tiny picture, assuming you are fluent in emoji-speak.

Full confession: I still haven’t quite figured out how to use emoji as anything other than a way to be weird, which is also true of hashtags. This Insta-update is probably the best excuse I’ll ever have to figure out how to hashtag and emoji like a pro. Watch out for my slice of pizza hashtag, guys. It’s totally getting the insta-treatment.
